A big debut

For the first time since the pandemic, Nespresso Professional met members of the hotels, restaurants, and cafes or catering services (HORECA) in search of the newest and the finest at the World Food Expo 2022. There, Nespresso finally announced the entry of the sleek and efficient Professional line’s Momento Coffee machine into the Philippine market.

The big, bold launch saw collaborations with Michael Yu of Bolt Coffee, Marfin Mercano of Chefs du Partie, and Eduard Catudio of Savage and Helm through the first ever Barista Battle, in partnership with Monin—a brand known for its gourmet flavored syrups. They used Nespresso Finezzo Pro, an Arabica light-roasted classic with floral notes and refreshing acidity with the Momento machine, plus Monin syrup.

With taste, uniqueness, preparation, knowledge, and overall look as the criteria, Eduard Catudio’s creation called Pamahaw was declared the best of the best. From the Visayan word for breakfast, the cocktail is his interpretation of the ubiquitous Pinoy favorite—pandesal and coffee—using rum, lemon, and lungo then refreshingly iced. All of it capped (quite literally) with a toasted flat pandesal.

The jury was composed of Nespresso Philippines’ coffee ambassador JR Abril, Monin coffee innovation manager for Southeast Asia Fiona Tan, and Anton Diaz of Our Awesome Planet. Diaz described the winning coffee cocktail as “like drinking a spiked coffee iced tea with a lazy beach breakfast vibe.”

Catudio was awarded P5,000 in cash, his personal Essenza Mini machine, and Aeroccino 3 milk frother. He also won a Nespresso Professional coffee set and Monin syrups for the restaurant.
